GLEN JEAN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Several roads and recreation areas within New River Gorge National Park and Preserve remain closed following storm damage and flooding across the region Sunday.
Park officials spent much of the day assessing damage and announced several closures Sunday evening.
The road to Nuttallburg is currently impassable due to a large washout and will remain closed until further notice.
At Fayette Station, the road is closed from the overhead railroad bridge on the south side to the Outpost Campground due to large downed trees. Officials said equipment will be needed to remove the trees. Two-way traffic remains open on the north side.
Cunard Road is also closed after a debris slide and downed trees blocked access. The closure has made both the Cunard river access area and Brooklyn Campground inaccessible.
Glade Creek Road remains closed beyond the Grandview Sandbar Campground.
The road to Thurmond is currently passable, according to park officials.
Additional rainfall is expected overnight, and visitors are being urged to remain alert and use caution, particularly in low-lying areas.
Park officials said conditions will continue to be monitored and additional updates will be provided as they change.
