WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – West Virginians should be prepared for periods of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms today into this evening, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.
Forecasters say passing disturbances moving along a wavering cold front will continue to bring showers and thunderstorms across the region. Some storms are expected to produce heavy downpours that could lead to localized flash flooding, especially in areas that receive repeated rounds of rain.
The National Weather Service also warns that some thunderstorms may produce damaging wind gusts.
A marginal risk for severe thunderstorms covers much of the state, while parts of southern West Virginia, including the Beckley area, face a slightly higher risk for excessive rainfall and localized flash flooding.
The National Weather Service urges residents to monitor the latest forecasts and make sure they have a reliable way to receive weather warnings.
Drivers are also reminded never to drive through flooded roadways. Officials stress the safety message: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
