FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Strong thunderstorms are moving across southern West Virginia Sunday evening, bringing heavy rainfall that has caused road closures, power outages and a reported rock slide.
As forecast, multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms produced heavy rain across the region, leading to flooding and hazardous travel conditions in several communities.
According to Fayette County 911, multiple roads throughout the county, primarily in the Danese, Layland and Meadow Bridge areas, have become impassable.
Stanford Road, from Prince Bridge to Layland Hill, is closed due to high water, multiple downed trees and a rock slide.
Springdale Road at Dawson Road has also been closed because of high water, while Cow Town Road is impassable due to flooding.
In neighboring Greenbrier County, officials have issued a traffic advisory for the area near the Rainelle Fire Department on James River and Kanawha Turnpike, where the roadway has been closed because of high water.
The storms have also caused scattered power outages. As of late Sunday night, Appalachian Power reported 128 customers without electricity in Fayette County and 147 outages in Greenbrier County.
Earlier in the evening, flooding was reported in the Oak Hill and Scarbro areas, with multiple sections of Main Street, Oyler Avenue and Scarbro Road experiencing high water.
Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roadways and never attempt to drive through standing water. Conditions may continue to change as additional rainfall moves through the region.
