WOOD COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Wood County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested a 19-year-old man after he was caught driving at an extreme speed through a construction zone on Interstate 77.
The incident occurred on June 3 when the deputy was stationed at mile marker 176 in a closed section of I-77, which provided access to both northbound and southbound lanes through a break in the temporary construction barrier.
The deputy observed a vehicle traveling southbound at a high rate of speed, as confirmed by radar, while passing multiple flashing signs marking the speed limit at 55 mph.
The speeding vehicle was also approaching a radar trailer and was near a group of highway construction workers when the deputy activated his emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop.
The vehicle yielded at mile marker 175.
The driver, identified as Benjamin Carl Bauman, 19, of Love Hill Road, was taken into custody and charged with Speeding more than 15 mph over the limit in a work zone and Reckless Driving.
He is currently out on bond.
