IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (LOOTPRESS) – A 16-year-old boy drowned Thursday afternoon in Lake Norman near Catalina Drive in Mooresville, prompting a multi-agency search and rescue operation.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 3:20 p.m. on July 17 reporting a possible drowning. Deputies arriving on scene learned the teen, identified as Kaleb Lamar Shields, had been swimming in the lake but never resurfaced.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Lake Patrol Unit responded immediately, deploying sonar equipment and a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to search underwater. They were joined by local fire departments and officers from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
At approximately 6:43 p.m., the ROV located Kaleb’s body, which was then recovered and brought to shore.
Sheriff Darren Campbell offered condolences, saying, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the young individual whose life was lost today.”
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning is ongoing.
