A Boone County teenager suffered serious head injuries after deputies say he was attacked by three individuals, one of whom allegedly struck him multiple times with a metal object.
According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to Boone Memorial Hospital in Madison at approximately 7:50 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, after receiving a report of an assault.
When deputies arrived at the hospital’s emergency department, they found a 17-year-old victim covered in blood with multiple head lacerations that required surgical staples. The teen also suffered cuts to both knees. Investigators photographed the injuries before obtaining a recorded statement.
According to the victim, he had been sleeping at his home on Six Mile Road near Danville when he woke to find Laef Marcum, along with Shane Smith and Mason Stevenson, in his yard. The victim told investigators that an argument broke out before all three allegedly attacked him.
During the assault, the victim said he was struck in the head multiple times with a metal object that had been taken from the bed of a truck on the property, resulting in the injuries that required emergency medical treatment.
The following morning, deputies returned to the residence and interviewed the victim’s juvenile brother, who witnessed the incident. According to the report, the witness identified Marcum, Smith, and Stevenson as the three people involved in the attack. Investigators said the witness’s account was consistent with the victim’s statement.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
