Detectives with the Criminal Investigative Section learned that two teenage males had been handling a firearm when one of them pointed the weapon at himself and pulled the trigger.
Preliminary findings indicate the teen believed the gun was not loaded. The firearm discharged, killing him at the scene.
Authorities said no further details about the victim or the circumstances have been released as the investigation continues.
Sheriff Joe Crawford urged the public to take the dangers of firearms seriously, stressing the importance of always treating every gun as if it is loaded and continuing to educate children and teens about the risks of mishandling weapons.
