INSTITUTE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Three individuals have been charged in relation to an incident of shots fired near Shawnee Soccer Complex in the Institute area on Sunday.
According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday, May 19, 2024, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched just before 3:00 in the afternoon with regard to shots fired on Smoot Avenue.
The incident cause led to a mass evacuation of families and volunteers at the nearby Shawnee Soccer Complex, where the West Virginia Soccer Association was hosting its Open Cup tournament, which was actively underway when the incident occurred.
“Everyone’s quick actions to clear the fields and help with all the players and children that were disconnected from their families was truly appreciated,” said the WVSA in a statement. “Everyone took time to consider the safety of all the children, which helped us be able to get everyone connected back to their families.”
No victims or injuries have been reported as a result of the incident, and authorities have taken three individuals into custody in relation to the shooting. These include 18-year-old Antonio Jacobs III of Saint Albans, WV, 24-year-old Kaden Bowman of Dunbar, WV, and 23-year-old Zion Clark of Dunbar, WV.
All three individuals have been charged with Wanton Endangerment, with Clark having also been charged on an unrelated Burglary warrant.
Authorities have yet to determine the reason for the shooting at the time of writing but did locate several weapons from the vehicle used during the incident.
Detective C.A. Boner is acting as lead investigator in the investigation, and, at the time of writing, all three suspects believed to have been involved are being held at South Central Regional Jail.
