LOOKOUT, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A tornado has been confirmed in the Lookout area of Fayette County, according to the National Weather Service.
The tornado touched down Wednesday evening as severe thunderstorms moved through the region.
Officials said a storm survey team identified damage consistent with a tornado, with preliminary estimates indicating wind speeds of at least 100 miles per hour.
“A survey team in the Lookout area of Fayette County has found evidence of a tornado that occurred yesterday afternoon,” the National Weather Service said in a statement posted to X.
“While more details are still being determined, there have been indications of at least 100 mph winds. An official statement will be released later.”
No tornado warning was issued at the time of the storm.
The tornado’s exact path has not yet been determined, though significant tree damage has been observed stretching from Edmond to Lookout.
The storm also downed multiple power lines, leading to widespread outages in the area. Service has since been restored.
This marks the first confirmed tornado in West Virginia since 2024. The most recent comparable event occurred two years ago, when an EF2 tornado touched down just a few miles from the current damage area.
Further details, including the tornado’s official rating and track, are expected following completion of the National Weather Service survey.
