SMITHERS, WV (LOOTPRESS) — What started as a routine traffic stop for an expired registration quickly escalated into a drug bust and two arrests in Fayette County on Monday, April 7, 2025.
While patrolling U.S. 60 (Midland Trail) in Smithers, an officer noticed a black Ford Focus with West Virginia plates 414674A that had expired on April 1. As the officer followed the car, the strong odor of marijuana wafted from the vehicle, prompting a traffic stop in the Dollar General parking lot.
The driver identified himself as Andrew Godbey, using a West Virginia ID, and the passenger was identified as Cami McCarthy. Both initially denied having any drugs in the vehicle. However, the truth came out quickly — McCarthy removed a plastic baggie of marijuana from inside her pants in her groin area, prompting officers to detain her on the spot.
Meanwhile, Godbey admitted he had smoked marijuana about three hours earlier and said used joints could be found near the vehicle’s center console. A field sobriety test was administered, which Godbey failed, showing clear signs of impairment.
A quick check with Beckley Communications revealed more trouble: Godbey had no valid driver’s license and was listed as “Not Licensed.” To top it off, he also had an active warrant out of Kanawha County.
Neither Godbey nor McCarthy could provide proof of insurance for the vehicle.
Both individuals were arrested and transported to the West Virginia State Police Oak Hill Detachment for processing.
Charges filed include:
-
Andrew Godbey: DUI (Drugs), Driving Without a License, Expired Registration, No Insurance, Simple Possession, and the outstanding warrant.
-
Cami McCarthy: Simple Possession.
