Traffic stop on I-64 leads to seizure of drugs capable of killing thousands

Austin Simms by Austin Simms
Thursday, July 17, 2025 5:40 pm

HURRICANE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A routine traffic stop in Hurricane led to a major drug bust earlier this month, with police seizing large quantities of illegal narcotics — including enough fentanyl to potentially kill 15,000 people, according to officials.

On the evening of July 8, 2025, at approximately 7:11 p.m., Hurricane Patrolman Wesley Allen was patrolling Interstate 64 near the 33.5 mile marker when he observed a vehicle with illegal dark window tint.

As he attempted to initiate a stop, the driver made an erratic lane change, exited the highway at an unsafe location, and fled down Route 19.

The pursuit continued through a right-turn-only lane near McDonald’s and around the back of the fast-food restaurant and Putnam County Bank before the vehicle finally stopped.

Upon approaching the driver, Patrolman Allen was told, “I’m sorry I ran. I should have pulled over—I just got nervous,” according to the report.

A pat-down of the driver led to the voluntary handover of a substance identified as methamphetamine.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed large quantities of illegal drugs, including:

  • 166.7 grams of crack cocaine
  • 30.9 grams of suspected fentanyl
  • 4.0 grams of oxycodone
  • 49 Xanax pills
  • 395.5 grams of THC
  • Various drug distribution paraphernalia, such as digital scales, baggies, and multiple cell phones

Both the driver and the passenger were arrested and charged with multiple drug offenses.

Charges include possession with intent to deliver crack cocaine, fentanyl, and marijuana, as well as possession of controlled substances including methamphetamine and oxycodone.

The driver also faces a charge of fleeing in a vehicle.

Mayor Scott Edwards praised Patrolman Allen’s work, calling it an “outstanding job” and commending the officer’s commitment to protecting the community.
