RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A domestic disturbance at 207 Prince Street on March 18, 2025, resulted in the arrest of two individuals on multiple charges, including child neglect and animal cruelty.
Officers were dispatched to the residence after receiving a report of a domestic altercation. Upon arrival, Corporal Sweetser and another officer attempted to make contact at the door. After several unanswered knocks, officers heard a female voice, later identified as Jzanae Anderson-McMillan, scream for help. When no one responded to further attempts at contact, officers used breaching tools to enter the residence.
Inside, officers encountered Beverly Vereen, who claimed that Anderson-McMillan had left through the back. A search of the residence revealed that there was no back exit, and Anderson-McMillan was found hiding under a pile of blankets. Upon questioning, she admitted to being the primary aggressor in a physical altercation with Vereen, stating that she had bitten his finger and struck him multiple times. Vereen stated that he was trying to assist Anderson-McMillan, who suffers from bipolar disorder and PTSD when she became physically aggressive.
During their inspection, officers found the residence in extremely unsanitary conditions, with trash bags, alcohol containers, and drug paraphernalia scattered throughout. Both Vereen and Anderson-McMillan appeared intoxicated and under the influence of marijuana. Additionally, officers discovered a dog and a cat confined in small, filthy crates without food or water. The animals’ living conditions were deemed inhumane, leading to animal control seizing both pets after Anderson-McMillan signed over ownership.
Two children were present in the home, and one reported witnessing Anderson-McMillan strike Vereen multiple times. The children were also distressed about their father’s blood on their bedroom floor and had attempted to clean it up.
A records check revealed that Vereen was out on bond with a condition prohibiting contact with Anderson-McMillan. As a result, he was arrested for violating bond conditions, obstructing justice for failing to respond to lawful commands, child neglect, and animal cruelty. Anderson-McMillan was arrested for domestic battery (first offense), child neglect, and animal cruelty. Both were processed and transported to South Regional Jail, where they are awaiting arraignment.
