BLUEFIELD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Two are facing charges after they left their dog in the car because they said they couldn’t afford to pay the extra 20-dollar pet fee at the hotel.
According to Bluefield Police, a witness observed a dog in a car around 11 pm, and throughout the night and into the following day, the dog was still in the vehicle. Police say the dog was breathing heavily and seemed to be in distress. The car was not left in the shade, and temperatures were already in the 80s by mid-morning.
Police contacted Melvin Sargent and Joey Chavez, the dog’s owners. They told police they left the dog in the car because they couldn’t afford to pay the extra 20-dollar pet fee. Police say they found 270 dollars in cash inside Chavez’s wallet.
Melvin Sargent was wanted out of Tazewell County. Both individuals were charged with animal cruelty.
