UPSHUR COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Two people killed in flooding in Upshur County have been identified, according to the West Virginia State Police.
The victims were identified as Judy A. Young, 59, and James J. Harper, 61, both of Upshur County.
The update comes after officials previously reported locating an overturned truck believed to belong to two people who had been reported missing. Emergency crews were initially unable to access the vehicle because of hazardous conditions and a large amount of surrounding debris.
According to West Virginia State Police, Young and Harper were found deceased inside a vehicle recovered from the Stonecoal Lake area of Upshur County.
A preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was swept from the roadway by rapidly rising floodwaters, police said.
Authorities said the victims’ next of kin have been notified. The investigation remains ongoing.
