WASHINGTON, DC (LOOTPRESS) – Wholesale inflation in the United States surged in April, marking the largest monthly increase in more than four years and signaling continued pressure on businesses and consumers nationwide.
According to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) report released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, producer prices for final demand increased 1.4% in April after rising 0.7% in March and 0.6% in February. Federal officials said the April increase was the largest monthly jump since March 2022.
On a yearly basis, wholesale prices climbed 6.0% over the past 12 months — the biggest annual increase since December 2022.
The Producer Price Index measures inflation at the wholesale level, tracking what businesses receive for goods and services before many of those costs are passed on to consumers.
Federal data showed rising energy costs played a major role in the increase. Prices for final demand goods jumped 2.0% in April, with energy prices surging 7.8%. Gasoline prices alone spiked 15.6% during the month.
Services also saw major increases. The index for final demand services rose 1.2% in April, the largest increase since March 2022. Officials said much of that rise was tied to increases in trade services, transportation, warehousing, trucking, fuel retailing, and legal services.
The report also showed inflation pressures building deeper within the supply chain.
Prices for processed goods for intermediate demand increased 2.7% in April, while unprocessed goods rose 4.1%. Crude petroleum prices climbed 11.3%, diesel fuel jumped 12.6%, and transportation-related costs continued rising sharply.
At the same time, some categories saw declines. Chicken egg prices dropped 49.7% in April, while prices for nonferrous scrap and residential natural gas also fell.
Economists closely watch the Producer Price Index because rising wholesale costs often translate into higher prices for consumers in the months ahead.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the next Producer Price Index report for May 2026 is scheduled to be released on June 11.
