(LOOTPRESS) – Walmart is preparing to roll out tap-to-pay technology at its stores across the United States, allowing customers to use contactless cards and mobile payment services including Apple Pay and Google Pay.
The retailer announced Friday, Aug. 21, that the new payment option will begin rolling out at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations on Aug. 24.
Walmart plans to expand tap-to-pay to all of its U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2026. The company also plans to bring the technology to its fuel stations by mid-2027.
Once available, customers will be able to make purchases by tapping eligible contactless credit or debit cards at checkout terminals. Customers will also be able to use compatible smartphones and smartwatches through services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
The move marks a significant change for Walmart, which has historically not accepted NFC-based contactless payments at its U.S. stores. Instead, the retailer has offered Walmart Pay, which allows customers to pay through the Walmart app using a QR code.
Walmart has not yet released a full list of locations that will be included in the initial rollout beginning Aug. 24.
