CARROLL COUNTY, VA (LOOTPRESS) – A Virginia sheriff’s deputy was killed and another injured Thursday night after a man opened fire on responding officers during a welfare check, authorities said.
According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway at approximately 9:26 p.m. after a family member requested a welfare check.
When deputies arrived, they made contact with a man identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, authorities say Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies, who returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. The second deputy was hit in his ballistic vest and was transported for medical evaluation. Officials said the deputy is in stable condition.
Following the shooting, Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. Law enforcement agencies have launched a coordinated search effort to locate him.
The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Puckett’s arrest. Authorities warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
Anyone who sees Puckett or has information about his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to call 911 immediately.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional details are expected to be released as they become available.
Carroll County Sheriff Kevin A. Kemp said the sheriff’s office will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
