GRANT COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A West Virginia high school basketball game has led to criminal charges after a student was seriously injured during play.
According to the West Virginia State Police, Corporal Charles S. Hartman of the Moorefield/Petersburg Detachment received a complaint on Thursday, February 27, from Melissa Streets.
She reported that her 17-year-old son had been assaulted the previous evening during a basketball game at Union High School.
Streets said her son was taken to the hospital for “profuse bleeding” and was later diagnosed with a broken nose.
Streets provided video evidence of the incident and claimed the assault was intentional. She also shared additional footage showing the same player involved in multiple aggressive actions during the game.
She told authorities she wished to pursue criminal charges.
After reviewing the footage, Corporal Hartman identified the player as 18-year-old Gage Ketterman.
In the video, Ketterman was seen elbowing opposing team members in the head or face, often away from the main action on the court.
Hartman concluded that Ketterman’s actions were both intentional and repeated, aimed at causing serious harm.
As a result of the investigation, Ketterman was arrested on Sunday, April 6, and charged with one count of malicious assault and two counts of attempted malicious assault.
