MORGANTOWN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A West Virginia physician has admitted to tax fraud and must pay back over $143,000 to the IRS and faces possible prison time.
According to U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld, David M. Anderson, a 63-year-old physician from Morgantown, has admitted to filing a false tax return.
Court documents reveal that Anderson understated his taxable income on multiple tax returns, resulting in a loss of $143,599 to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
“The Justice Department works every day to ensure that those who fail to pay their income taxes are held to account,” said U.S. Attorney Ihlenfeld.
“Dr. Anderson fell far short of his obligation and now he must pay up, plus penalties and interest, and faces a lengthy prison sentence.”
Anderson could face up to three years in federal prison.
A federal district court judge will determine his sentence, taking into consideration the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eleanor Hurney, with the investigation conducted by the IRS-Criminal Investigation division.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the case.
