CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia State Senate passed Senate Bill 83 on Wednesday, aiming to improve transparency and accountability within the state’s foster care system.
The bill enhances oversight of child welfare by granting the Foster Care Ombudsman access to confidential records related to child abuse, neglect, and fatalities.
Under the new legislation, the Ombudsman or their designee will be able to access crucial information while carrying out their duties, including investigating child fatalities or near fatalities.
Supporters argue the bill will allow for more comprehensive investigations and foster better systemic changes.
Currently, confidentiality laws often hinder the Ombudsman’s ability to fully examine cases involving tragic incidents, limiting their capacity to make informed recommendations for policy improvements.
The bill, which passed unanimously in the Senate, is now set to be considered by the House of Delegates.
