WASHINGTON, D.C. (LOOTPRESS) — West Virginia’s U.S. senators issued statements praising President Donald Trump following his State of the Union address, pointing to economic growth, border security efforts, and support for domestic energy as key themes of the speech.
Sen. Jim Justice said the address showcased what he described as major accomplishments since Trump took office, crediting the administration with strengthening the economy, securing the southern border, supporting law enforcement, cutting federal spending, and expanding the nation’s energy sector.
Justice said the country is “back on the right track” and emphasized what he called renewed momentum moving forward.
Sen. Shelley Moore Capito also described the speech as forward-looking, saying the president outlined both progress made during his first year in office and plans to continue advancing national priorities. Capito noted Trump framed the address around the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, urging Americans to view the milestone as an opportunity to shape the country’s future.
Capito added that she believes families in West Virginia and across the country are seeing renewed optimism, pointing to tax policy changes, job growth, and investments in American energy production — including coal, natural gas, and emerging technologies — as benefiting the state’s economy and workforce.
Both senators highlighted the president’s emphasis on immigration enforcement and border security, including support for Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement and efforts aimed at reducing drug trafficking.
During the address, President Trump also recognized members of the military for their service and sacrifice. Among those honored were U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, who was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously, and U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, who also received the Purple Heart. Their families attended the speech.
Capito said the recognitions reflected the bravery and commitment of service members from West Virginia and across the nation.
The State of the Union also focused on lowering healthcare costs, reducing government waste, strengthening law enforcement, and expanding American energy independence.
