CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS — West Virginia State Parks officials announced the launch of the West FURginia State Park Ranger program, a pet-friendly initiative designed to help park guests and their dogs explore the Mountain State’s natural beauty together.
To participate in the program, guests should stop by a state park nature center to pick up an official West FURginia Ranger checklist. Upon completing five activities with their dog, guests should return the checklist to the nature center to receive an official West FURginia State Park Ranger certificate and a free commemorative dog tag.
“Pets hold a special place in our lives and in the hearts of our park visitors,” said Dillard Price, acting chief of West Virginia State Parks. “This program celebrates that bond while giving guests another reason to get outdoors, explore West Virginia’s natural beauty and make new memories with their loyal companions.”
In addition to the new program, West Virginia’s state parks and forests offer many pet-friendly accommodations, allowing families to enjoy overnight stays without leaving their pets behind. These accommodations are popular, so guests are encouraged to call ahead to confirm availability when planning their trip.
“West Virginia’s state parks are welcoming places for everyone, including your pets,” said Valerie Chaney, Chief Naturalist for West Virginia State Parks. “This program adds a fun, family-friendly way to enjoy the outdoors and makes trips to our parks even more special for those who want to share the experience with their pets.”
To ensure a positive experience for everyone, guests traveling with pets are asked to respect the following park “petiquette” during their stay.
- Dogs and cats are permitted in designated pet-friendly lodge rooms, cabins and cottages. A maximum of two pets per room or cabin.
- Pets must be leashed and restrained during all stays.
- Certification of vaccinations from a veterinarian is required.
- Guests must clean up after their pets.
- Guests must use designated pet-walking areas, where available.
- Guests are responsible for any damages or extra cleaning fees.
