BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Beckley residents are invited to take part in an educational and inspiring celebration this fall. On Tuesday, October 15, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., the WV Eye Can Lions Club will host White Cane Awareness Day at the Chris and Kameron Cline Center, located at 2871 Robert C. Byrd Drive.
The event, organized by club treasurer Cole Sweeney, will bring together members of District 29-C Lions Club, Leaderdog, the Children’s Vision Rehabilitation Program (CVR), the Mountain State Council of the Blind, and performers from the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind.
Visitors can look forward to guest speakers, educational activities, and special performances. The WV Eye Can Lions Club will also hold a raffle to raise funds for the newly founded branch.
A mobile eye clinic will be on-site, offering free screenings for visual acuity, glaucoma, and visual field tests. In addition, attendees can explore resources on blindness-related technology, guide dogs, white canes, and everyday etiquette for interacting with people who are visually impaired.
Interactive activities will include a white cane obstacle course, eye-disease simulation exercises, blindness trivia, and demonstrations of accessible technology. Guests will also have the opportunity to connect directly with individuals who are visually impaired and learn from their experiences.
“This event really has something for everyone—teachers, nurses, social workers, or anyone who just wants to expand their knowledge and better understand the visually impaired community,” organizers said.
Mark your calendars and join the celebration on October 15 for an afternoon of learning, awareness, and community spirit.
