MONONGALIA COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Monongalia County woman has been charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury following an investigation into severe injuries suffered by a 14-day-old infant.
According to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office, detectives began investigating on October 14 after being contacted by Child Protective Services (CPS) regarding a report of possible abuse.
The referral, received late on October 13, alleged that the infant had been violently shaken and injured at a residence on Dunkard Avenue in Westover.
CPS arranged for the infant to be taken to a hospital for evaluation and took custody of the child.
Medical professionals determined that the baby had sustained multiple serious injuries that were non-accidental and inconsistent with childbirth.
Detectives later learned that the child’s father, Timothy Reichard, had accused the child’s mother, identified as Cheyann Nicole Reichard, 21, of the abuse.
A search warrant was obtained for the residence, and investigators recovered evidence supporting the medical findings.
Based on that evidence, Reichard was charged with Child Abuse Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. The case remains under active investigation.
No additional information has been released at this time, the sheriff’s office said.
