Birmingham, AL. – The second half has belonged to Glenville State all throughout the NCAA Tournament.
That trend didn’t stop and its the reason the Lady Pioneers are National Champions.
Glenville State outscored Western Washington 23-16 in the third quarter, pulling ahead and never relinquishing the lead in an 85-72 win over Western Washington in Division II National Championship.
The title game victory is the first for any program in school history.
Leading 27-21 in the second quarter, the Lady Pioneers yielded the lead before the break trailing by as many as seven points in the frame after Western Washington ripped off a 23-10 run.
Glenville closed the gap to two points before the break and used a 10-0 run early in the third quarter, never fully yielding it.
Mountain East Conference Player of the Year Re’Shawna Stone led the Lady Pioneers with 25 points while Zakiyah Winfield added 23. Stone was named Tournament MVP following the game for her efforts.
Wyoming East graduate Skylar Davidson played nine minutes, registering a rebound and a steal.
The win brings an end to a historic run that saw Glenville State break the record for most points in a tournament run.
Glenville wraps up its season with a 35-1 record.
