WEST VIRGINIA, WV (LOOTPRESS) – With the General Election just around the corner, West Virginia residents are preparing to vote on many significant issues, not the least of which will be the prohibition of medically assisted suicide.
Amendment No. 1 will be included as part of West Virginia ballots with a stated purpose, “to protect West Virginians against medically assisted suicide.”
The amendment itself pertains to euthanasia, mercy killing, and medically assisted suicide. While the passage of the amendment would not noticeably alter state law immediately, it would allow for the inclusion of additional text in the State Bill of Rights.
“Nothing in this section prohibits the administration or prescription of medication for the purpose of alleviating pain or discomfort while the patient’s condition follows its natural course,” reads the text.
“Nor does anything in this section prohibit the withholding or withdrawing of life-sustaining treatment, as requested by the patient or the patient’s decision-maker, in accordance with State law.”
The change would come in that already-outlawed medically assisted suicide would be unable to be brought into law by way of introduction of a bill declaring such by West Virginia legislators.
The General Election is set to take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Those wishing to register to vote or update their voting information may do so at the West Virginia Secretary of State website.
