CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) — The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) has welcomed the U.S. Forest Service’s recent acquisition of a 2,700-acre land tract in Blackwater Canyon.

The WVDOH, in collaboration with Gov. Jim Justice and various federal, state, and local partners, is actively involved in completing the Blackwater Loop Trail project.

This project aims to connect key outdoor destinations and create a continuous scenic route for hikers, bikers, and nature enthusiasts. Furthermore, it is being pursued in conjunction with the completion of Corridor H, which is a top priority for Gov. Justice for enhancing accessibility and fostering economic development in central West Virginia, while also preserving the environment.

Travis Long, the director of the Technical Support & Services Division of the WVDOH, expressed the significance of the recent land acquisition, emphasizing its alignment with ongoing efforts to promote outdoor recreation in the region.

The protection of this land will complement the plans for completing the Blackwater Loop Trail project. Corridor H, which starts near Weston and extends across central West Virginia through Wardensville, is set to connect with Interstate 81 in Strasburg, Virginia.

This highway is expected to facilitate economic development and tourism in remote areas of Grant, Tucker, and Hardy counties, while also improving travel times through the mountains and providing a safe route for travelers and local residents. Presently, over 120 miles of Corridor H are open to traffic, with around 30 miles remaining to be completed.

The land purchase by the Forest Service, with the support of U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin, highlights the importance of conserving West Virginia’s scenic landscapes while fostering economic development.

The WVDOH expresses confidence in the leadership and vision demonstrated by Gov. Justice and the senators, as their efforts will ensure that future generations can continue to appreciate the unparalleled beauty of Blackwater Canyon.

Travis Long also noted that the land acquisition represents a significant milestone as it will enable the creation of a world-class trail network connecting Blackwater Falls State Park to the Allegheny Trail system, and bring the towns of Thomas and Davis closer together as part of the Blackwater Loop Trail and Corridor H initiatives.

The WVDOH reiterates its commitment to promoting sustainable infrastructure projects that balance the need for economic growth with the preservation of West Virginia’s natural resources.

The acquisition of this land stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and shared vision among federal, state, and local stakeholders.
