GILBERT, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Wyoming County man has been arrested and charged following an alleged assault on his mother, according to a report from the Gilbert Police Department.
On March 16, 2025, an officer patrolling along US Route 52 was flagged down by a woman in distress, who was inside a silver SUV traveling north on the highway.
The officer observed that the woman appeared to be holding something in her hand and was in distress.
After parking at the Gilbert City Hall lot, the officer approached the woman, who pointed toward a man walking away from the vehicle. She then began shouting, “He beat me.”
The officer ordered the man to walk back toward the scene while attempting to gather information from the woman.
The officer then restrained the suspect, later identified as 38-year-old Stephen Hatfield, of North Spring, and placed him in a patrol unit while statements were collected.
According to the victim’s statement, Hatfield is her son and lives with her in Wyoming County.
She reported that Hatfield had threatened to choke her if she did not take him to an ATM and give him money for drugs.
While on the way to an ATM in Gilbert, Hatfield allegedly demanded that she transport him to a residence in Neds Branch. When she refused, he reportedly struck her in the face and pulled her hair.
The victim further alleged that Hatfield warned her that if she did not follow his commands, he would choke her and beat her further once they returned home.
The officer observed that the woman had redness and bruising on her cheek, as well as a reddened and swollen eye that appeared to be the result of blunt trauma.
When questioned, Hatfield waived his right to legal counsel and admitted that he and his mother argue frequently. He stated that they had a verbal dispute over money but denied making physical contact with her.
He did, however, admit to attempting to force her to give him money for drugs.
A background check revealed that Hatfield had previously pleaded guilty to a second offense domestic battery charge on January 16, 2025.
Hatfield was arrested and charged with Domestic Battery, Domestic Violence, and Robbery/Attempted Robbery.
He is currently at Southwestern Regional Jail on a $25,000 bond.
