(LOOTPRESS) – Kevin Conroy, who provided the voice of Batman for three decades, passed away Thursday after a brief battle with cancer.
First taking on the iconic file of the titular character for Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, Conroy would embody the Caped Crusader in over 60 productions, including 15 films and 2 dozen video games, according to DC Comics.
Conroy was “the most beloved voice of Batman in the animated history of the character,” said DC Comics in a statement.
“His incomparable, nuanced performance as the voice of Batman that put Conroy on the map – and the fans’ radar – when Batman: The Animated Series debuted on September 5, 1992. From that point on, Conroy would forever be linked to the Dark Knight.”
Batman: The Animated Series debuted in September, 1992, and served as the introduction to the iconic character of Batman for an entire generation.
Conroy’s Batman was perfectly matched in the series by film veteran and Star Wars legend Mark Hamill’s unparalleled work voicing The Joker.
“Kevin was a brilliant actor. For several generations, he has been the definitive Batman,” said Hamill. “It was one of those perfect scenarios where they got the exact right guy for the exact right part, and the world was better for it. His rhythms and subtleties, tones and delivery – that all also helped inform my performance,” Hamill continued.
“He was the ideal partner – it was such a complementary, creative experience. I couldn’t have done it without him. He will always be my Batman.”
In addition to his extensive work as The Dark Knight, Conroy’s resume also encompassed an array of stage, film, television, and video game work.
Conroy was also a Julliard Educated performer, earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1978.
He passed away at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, New York from intestinal cancer on November 10, 2022. He was 66 years old.
