BERKELEY COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – On Friday, Berkeley County Schools Superintendent Ronald Stephens announced that the county school system experienced a network outage that has limited IT operations throughout the district.
Stephens said that the board office worked quickly to notify law enforcement agencies and began an investigation to determine the cause and scope of the incident.
“We want our students and the community to know that we place a high value on maintaining the integrity and security of the data we hold in our systems, and we are working diligently to restore operations,” Stephens said.
On Saturday, Superintendent Stephens provided an update to the public on the situation.
Stephens says that Berkeley County Schools has been responding to a security incident that has limited access to computer resources throughout the district.
Since that time, Berkeley County Schools have been working diligently to restore operations and further the investigation of the incident. A decision on if classes will resume Monday has not been made and an update will be provided by Sunday afternoon.
Students’ Chromebooks are not believed to be affected by this incident but if it is determined that there was an unauthorized access to sensitive personal information, Berkeley County Schools will notify individuals in accordance with applicable laws.
Superintendent Stephens states that an investigation into the full scope of this incident is ongoing.
“I offer my sincere appreciation for the support you have shown to our school district,” Stephens said. “We will continue to provide updates as the investigation permits.”
