MASON COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has agreed to spend about $45 billion to rent computing power from a massive data center development in West Virginia, according to multiple reports.
The six-year agreement with British AI infrastructure company Nscale will provide Anthropic with approximately 460 megawatts of computing capacity from Nscale’s Monarch Compute Campus in Mason County.
The deal represents another major commitment tied to the West Virginia development, which Nscale describes as one of the world’s largest planned artificial intelligence infrastructure projects.
Nscale’s Monarch Compute Campus is being developed on more than 2,250 acres in Mason County. The company says the first phase is designed to provide 1.35 gigawatts of AI computing capacity, with the campus eventually capable of expanding beyond 8 gigawatts. Nscale has said more than $20 billion in capital investment is planned for the site.
Under the Anthropic agreement, Nscale is expected to use Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin technology to provide computing power for Anthropic’s artificial intelligence operations. The capacity is expected to begin coming online in late 2027.
Anthropic is the company behind Claude, an artificial intelligence assistant that competes with products from companies including OpenAI and Google.
The West Virginia agreement comes as Anthropic has rapidly expanded the amount of computing infrastructure available to operate and develop its AI systems. The company has entered into several multibillion-dollar computing agreements in recent months as demand for artificial intelligence services continues to grow.
Nscale previously announced plans involving Microsoft for up to 1.35 gigawatts of AI computing capacity at the same West Virginia campus. That agreement also called for the deployment of Nvidia Vera Rubin systems.
The Monarch project is expected to bring significant investment and employment to Mason County. Nscale says the first phase alone is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions. The company also projects the development will eventually generate more than $80 million annually in West Virginia tax revenue, including approximately $40 million for Mason County schools.
The reported $45 billion Anthropic agreement further positions the Mason County development as a major hub in the rapidly expanding U.S. artificial intelligence infrastructure industry.
