(LOOTPRESS) – A popular brand of canned baked beans sold at major retailers, including Walmart, is being voluntarily recalled over concerns it may contain an undeclared allergen that could pose serious health risks to some consumers.
Vietti Food Group announced the recall of 4,515 cases of its Yellowstone Brown Sugar Molasses Baked Beans due to the potential presence of soy, a common allergen that was not disclosed on the product’s label. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shared details of the recall on its website Monday following the company’s May 2 announcement.
Soy is among the nine major allergens identified by the FDA. Individuals with a soy allergy or sensitivity risk severe allergic reactions, which can include hives, nausea, difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, and even life-threatening anaphylaxis, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.
The affected 15-ounce cans were distributed across 23 states, including Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
Retailers such as Walmart have already posted notices of the recall on their websites. Consumers can identify the recalled product by checking the “best if used by” date of February 17, 2028, printed on the bottom of the cans, along with specific product codes.
So far, no illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported, the company said.
In a statement to ABC News, a Vietti Food Group spokesperson said the company is working with retailers to notify customers but does not yet have a full list of affected stores. Consumers who have purchased the recalled product are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange.
