CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – About 60 students from Capital High School traveled to the West Virginia Capitol on Wednesday to voice their opinions regarding recent immigration enforcement efforts in the state.
Students who attended the rally said they hoped their presence would help spark change and draw attention to their concerns about the issue.
The event also prompted criticism from Del. Kathie Hess Crouse, R-Putnam, who addressed the rally in a social media post.
In the post, Crouse expressed disappointment about the demonstration and questioned how it was organized.
She also claimed that students may have received extra credit for attending and raised concerns about how they traveled to the Capitol and whether their parents were aware.
Capital High School responded in a statement posted on Facebook, saying the rally was not organized or endorsed by the school and was led entirely by students.
“While today’s protest involved Capital students, it was not a Capital High School-sanctioned event. The demonstration was entirely student-led. No staff members participated, and any students who chose to attend were signed out of school by a parent or guardian.”
Kanawha County Schools also addressed the situation and reiterated that the demonstration was not a school-sponsored activity.
The district added that no school buses were used to transport students to the Capitol and that students did not receive extra credit for attending the rally.
