WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for parts of the region as dangerously cold temperatures and winter weather move in, according to the National Weather Service.

The Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Friday for northwest Pocahontas County and southeast Randolph County. During this time, wind chill values ranging from the single digits to as cold as 14 degrees below zero are expected. Prolonged exposure to these conditions could lead to frostbite, especially on exposed skin.
At the same time, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 p.m. Wednesday until 1 p.m. Thursday for northwest Pocahontas, southeast Randolph, and southeast Webster counties.

Forecasters say snow showers will begin this evening and continue into Thursday, particularly across higher elevations. Up to 3 inches of snow is possible this evening, with heavier snow showers causing sudden reductions in visibility. Additional accumulating snow is expected late Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning, with 3 to 6 inches possible in the northern mountains and 1 to 3 inches in southern mountain areas.

Rain is expected to transition to snow in the lowlands Wednesday evening, with up to one inch of accumulation in some locations. As colder air moves in, slick and hazardous road conditions are likely across the region.
Strong winds will accompany the system, with gusts between 40 and 45 mph possible in some areas. These winds could lead to blowing snow, reduced visibility, and slippery roads, as well as loose objects being blown around and minor tree damage, which may result in isolated power outages.
Travelers are urged to use caution, especially during the evening and overnight hours. Drivers should allow extra time to reach their destinations and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, particularly across higher terrain.
