WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) today visited West Virginia State Police Academy, where she attended a training for law enforcement on how to engage with children and adults with disabilities. The training was led by Steve Slack from the National Down Syndrome Society and Sherry Eling from the WV Prosecuting Attorneys Institute.
“It’s vital to the safety and wellbeing of our communities that our law enforcement officers are prepared to help every West Virginian they encounter,” said Congresswoman Miller. “I applaud the National Down Syndrome Society, the WV Prosecuting Attorneys Institute, and the Academy for coming together to educate cadets on how to engage with and meet the needs of those with disabilities. The West Virginia State Police’s strong commitment to understanding disabilities was evident throughout my visit. I thank them for having me today, and for all they do to protect our great state.”
“When I began to train law enforcement about disabilities as a volunteer with the National Down Syndrome Society’s Ambassador Program, Colonel Cahill and the West Virginia State Police gave their full support to increasing understanding of disabilities,” said Steve Slack with the National Down Syndrome Society. “They have worked with both the National Down Syndrome Society and WVU’s Center For Excellence in Disabilities to make sure that the voices of people with disabilities are heard and their needs are met, not just in West Virginia but throughout the country. Congresswoman Carol Miller has once more shown that she is a friend to both law enforcement and to people with disabilities. I am grateful to be able to have trained WV State Police Cadets with her today.”
