SISSONVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A West Virginia deputy is in the hospital after being shot during a pursuit.
According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), on Thursday, February 29, 2023, around 1:11 a.m., Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies were involved in a pursuit on Walker Drive in Sissonville.
The suspect vehicle turned from Walker Drive onto Applehill Lane and drove to the end of the roadway before stopping.
After stopping, a male occupant of the vehicle fired multiple shots at the deputy as he was exiting his patrol car.
One of the shots fired by the suspect struck the deputy, but the deputy was able to return fire and radio for backup.
Multiple officers from surrounding agencies including Charleston Police, South Charleston Police, Nitro Police, and Saint Albans Police arrived to assist deputies.
The male suspect, identified as Nathan Oxley, 43 of Sissonville refused to comply with lawful orders to surrender, and non-lethal force was used to gain compliance so he could be apprehended at the scene without further injuries to assisting officers and deputies.
Oxley was not struck by any of the return shots fired by the deputy.
Currently a female passenger of the vehicle whom deputies have identified as Rebecca Linville (aka, “Becky”) remains at large in the area.
K-9s have been deployed and deputies are searching for Linville; however, it is not believed that Linville is a threat to the public.
The KCSO encourages area citizens to remain vigilant as Linville is believed to still be in the area.
She was reportedly wearing gray legging-style pants with a blue shirt. She is approximately 5’3″, 110 lbs., with blonde/red hair.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputy was transported to CAMC General Hospital by Kanawha County Medics for a single gunshot wound.
He is reported to be in stable condition and scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning. The suspect was also taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained during the incident.
The pursuit is believed to have been initiated after the deputy recognized the vehicle as the suspect vehicle from an active disturbance call, he was responding to.
The disturbance was reported at Galena Lane in Sissonville and involved Mr. Oxley.
The caller on Galena Lane reported Mr. Oxley was violent and possibly under the influence of methamphetamine.
Mr. Oxley is in custody and is expected to be charged with multiple offenses including the attempted murder of a police officer and malicious wounding.
