PHILIPPI, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Dollar General manager has been charged with soliciting a minor after allegedly locking a juvenile girl inside a Barbour County store and making an inappropriate comment to her.
According to a criminal complaint, a Barbour County deputy responded to the Dollar General in Philippi on September 12 after receiving a complaint from the juvenile’s mother.
The juvenile told the deputy that the manager waved for her to enter the store after she was dropped off. When she remarked that he had nearly locked her out, the manager allegedly responded, “Well, now you are locked in.”
The juvenile said the manager accompanied her to the party-supply section, where she selected a basket and greeting card. She also picked up a pack of chewing gum before approaching the checkout area.
According to the complaint, the manager instructed another employee not to ring up the purchase, saying he would handle it himself. He allegedly gave the girl a “manager’s discount” that removed the basket and card from the transaction, leaving her to pay only for the gum.
The manager then allegedly asked, “What are you going to do for me now since I paid for your stuff?”
The juvenile reportedly responded that he could tell his manager he paid for the items. He allegedly replied, “Good thing I am the manager,” and laughed.
The girl told police that another employee later went outside to take out the trash. The manager then reportedly said he had to unlock the door. Once it was opened, the juvenile immediately left the store.
The deputy said the girl was visibly upset and crying while providing her statement. She said she had been frightened because she was locked inside the store with two adult men.
The juvenile also alleged that she had seen the manager photographing underage girls at a fair the previous week. Investigators seized his cellphone to determine whether it contained evidence that could corroborate that claim.
During questioning, the manager admitted purchasing items for the juvenile and locking her inside the store, according to the complaint. He claimed locking the door was consistent with his training but denied making the alleged remark about what she would do for him.
The manager also allegedly admitted to drinking while working. Police said a preliminary breath test registered .136 and that he told the deputy he needed help.
The manager, whose name was not included in the provided complaint, was arrested and charged with soliciting a minor. He was transported to Tygart Valley Regional Jail to await arraignment.
The charge is an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
