FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Fayette County man is facing charges after allegedly threatening and struggling with a sheriff’s deputy during a domestic disturbance investigation.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Fayette County Magistrate Court, Robert Watkins, 44, of Fayetteville, was arrested June 17 and charged with obstructing an officer and assault on a police officer.
The complaint states that a deputy with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department responded to a domestic complaint at a residence on Cunard Road in the Fayetteville area.
Upon arrival, the deputy spoke with an individual at the home, who reportedly said Watkins had been drinking, arguing and breaking mirrors and other items inside the residence. The complaint states there had been no physical altercation and the individual wanted Watkins to leave the residence.
According to the complaint, another deputy remained with the other individual while the responding deputy spoke with Watkins.
During the encounter, the deputy reported that Watkins became increasingly agitated and aggressive while gathering belongings to leave the residence.
The complaint alleges Watkins repeatedly cursed at the deputy, called derogatory names and argued with law enforcement about removing his belongings.
The complaint further alleges that Watkins walked outside while continuing to curse and threaten the deputy.
Police say Watkins then allegedly told the deputy to remove the badge and “he would show me how tough he is” before making what the deputy described as an aggressive movement.
The deputy reported using a leg sweep to take Watkins to the ground before taking him into custody on charges of obstructing an officer and assault on a police officer.
According to the complaint, Watkins was transported to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department for processing. While being processed, he complained of arm pain and was transported by EMS to Plateau Medical Center for treatment before being discharged.
