BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The very first CASA of New River cohort of advocates was sworn in on Tuesday morning.
Volunteers, community members, and local leadership joined CASA of New River Executive Director, Dr. Kristi Dumas and the first cohort of advocates at the Raleigh County Courthouse on Tuesday for a swearing-in ceremony led by Raleigh County Circuit Court Judge, Andrew Dimlich.
“I just want to say that I’m so proud of this first cohort of individuals and the work that they have done. We have such a quality group of folks from different backgrounds,” said Dr. Dumas, addressing those in attendance for the event.
“It’s such a well-rounded group that I’m excited to pass over these cases today and hit the ground running. I’m confident in the job that they’re going to do for CASA and they will make such a difference in these kids’ [lives.]”
First launched over the summer, CASA of New River works to promote and provide support for court-appointed volunteer advocacy to assist in providing victims of neglect or abuse with opportunities to thrive in safe, permanent homes.
“These are some of the most depressing cases you’ll ever have. These neglect cases are by far the most important cases we have in the entire court system,” said Circuit Court Judge, Andrew Dimlich. “I’m really looking forward to having the extra manpower for these kids. I think it’ll make a big difference in their lives and I think it’ll make a big difference in the reunification if it’s possible, and if not reunification, then the transition.”
Among the goals outlined by CASA of New River upon its establishment were working to ensure that children in foster care are safe and that children have access to safe and loving family homes, and the minimization of time spent in foster care for children.
