CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Governor Jim Justice last week, along with the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced the graduation of 52 new corrections officers.
The latest of 429 graduates this year, 2024’s total graduates up to this point nearly matches the 483 which graduated in 2023. This development has come due to a number of recruitment efforts on behalf of the Division of Corrections, including increased corrections officer pay scales, which continue to combat staff deficiencies on the state-wide level. 19 facilities are reportedly at a vacancy rate of 10% or below for corrections officers.
“I couldn’t be happier for the 429 folks who’ve graduated from the training academy this year. It’s truly amazing to see so many West Virginians stepping up to serve in these important roles. By improving pay and benefits, we’re not just filling positions, we’re bringing in talented and dedicated individuals who are passionate about making a difference,” said Governor Justice.
“This graduation is a shining example of what we can achieve when we pull the rope together, and I’m committed to supporting our correctional officers as they build brighter futures for themselves and our communities. I cannot understate the importance of this transformation. People are very proud to be a correctional officer in West Virginia.”
The West Virginia Corrections Academy aims to equip those who graduate with a comprehensive curriculum which encompasses vital subjects including the Prison Rape Elimination Act, Correctional Documentation, Interpersonal Communication Skills, Emergency Procedures, Autism Awareness, Suicide Prevention, Scenario-Based Training, Trauma-Informed Correctional Care, and various others.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome our new recruits to the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Their commitment to public service and their eagerness to make a positive impact in our communities are truly inspiring,” said West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation Commissioner, William Marshall. “We are confident that they will carry forward our mission with integrity, professionalism, and dedication. The future of our organization is bright with these outstanding individuals joining our ranks.”
