WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – If you’re interested in contributing to scientific research, you can take part in the Hellbender and Mudpuppy Survey in West Virginia.
This project aims to collect data on the distribution of these amphibians and protect their habitats. The survey will span two years and welcomes participation from anglers, science enthusiasts, and the general public.
Here’s how you can help:
1. Report any sightings or bycatch of hellbenders and mudpuppies to the WVDNR through the survey. Your observations will be valuable for understanding their distribution and status in the state.
2. If you happen to catch a salamander while fishing, handle it with care. Remove the hook using pliers and release the salamander back into the water, or cut the line as close to the hook as possible. This helps minimize harm to the salamanders.
3. Spread awareness about these species and share information about the survey with others. By dispelling misconceptions and promoting participation, you can contribute to the conservation efforts.
4. When exploring waterways, avoid moving rocks to build structures or alter the environment. Salamanders and other aquatic life rely on the specific microenvironments provided by instream rocks, so leaving them undisturbed is crucial for their habitat.
5. Lastly, advocate for clean waterways and support initiatives that aim to reduce sedimentation and pollution from various sources. This will play a significant role in ensuring the preservation of these salamanders and their habitats for future generations.
