SUMMERS COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A new traffic pattern will take effect on Interstate 64 at the Sandstone Bridge as part of an ongoing rehabilitation project, according to transportation officials.
The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) announced that beginning Wednesday, April 1, 2026, traffic at milepost 139 will be shifted for the final phase of construction. The updated pattern is expected to remain in place through Friday, October 30, 2026.
As part of the change, the existing lane closure will be adjusted to allow vehicles to travel on newly completed fast lanes. In addition, the eastbound exit ramp at Exit 139 will be closed for the duration of this phase.
Motorists traveling eastbound on I-64 who need to access West Virginia Route 20 will be detoured approximately four miles east to Exit 143 at Green Sulphur Springs. Drivers will then reenter the interstate westbound and return to Exit 139.
Officials estimate the detour will add approximately 10 to 12 minutes to travel time.
Transportation officials noted that weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances could impact the project timeline.
Drivers are urged to follow all posted traffic control signs and exercise caution while traveling through the work zone.
The WVDOH apologized for any inconvenience caused by the construction.
