CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – An interim rate increase for the water system that serves Mount Olive Correctional Complex was approved Wednesday by the Public Service Commission of West Virginia.
The new rates for Gauley River Public Service District go into effect immediately, but are subject to being refunded.
Gauley River, which has been the subject of a number of issues before the Commission, purchases its water from Kanawha Falls Public Service District, another troubled system.
On November 18, 2024, Gauley River filed its petition. PSC staff recommended that Gauley River rates increase by 50 cents per 1,000 gallons.
In addition, the Commission ordered the district to file a report within 60 days “evaluating and explaining the reasons for its excess unaccounted-for water and a plan for a cost-effective remedial reduction of the level of unaccounted-for water.”
