The greatest thing the United States government ever created was a United States Marine. The raw material is derived from every corner of our nation, and sometimes imported from others. The qualities necessary for processing are unique and rare. There must be a sense of purpose greater than self, there must be a pride that is not of oneself but of the spirit of our nation, and there must be a tenacity that belies the logical point of surrender.
In two places this material is molded into the greatest fighting force the world has ever known. From the swamps of South Carolina to the bays of Southern California this material is forged into a fighting force that has universal application. There is no military force in the world more deadly than the United States Marine Corps. However, there is also no force that can shift from the mindset of combat to that of humanitarian so rapidly. Should our nation decide to greet you with combat, you will find the Marine Corps delivering the letter. Should our nation decide to extend a helping hand, you will find a Marine with everything you need and more. The Marine is the most versatile diplomat we have. It can shift roles on a millisecond’s notice.
It is a creation that is as hard as a diamond and soft as a puppy’s fur all at the same time. It is the personification of the duality of our nation: One of a warrior’s spirit and one of a spirit of generosity and charity. We may hand out toys to kids on Christmas, but we will conduct an amphibious assault against our enemies literally a minute later.
On this day, I wish my fellow Marines a happy 248th birthday. Never forget your warrior spirit, or your devotion to charity and goodwill. There is no greater diplomat of this nation than a United States Marine. Your tenacity, spirit, determination, and discipline set an example for humanity. Our devotion to honor, courage and commitment are a beacon of hope in a world that has turned to selfishness and cowardice. The spirit of the Marine Corps that lives in the hearts and minds of every Marine is a testament to the righteousness of our God and our Country, to which we are devoted. As we reflect on our current times, remember those that have come before us, and solidified our legacy through immense adversity. As we revel in our 248 years of existence, never forget the men and women that laid down their lives at Bladensburg, New Providence, Chapultepec, Kaison, Inchon, Iwo Jima, Ramadi and many more places. We must live every day carrying the spirit of those warriors, and the hopes and dreams they had for their loved ones. Hopes and dreams of a peaceful nation of prosperity, and a security to pursue the rights and liberties of a free people.
