WELCH, WV (LOOTPRESS) — The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office is inviting residents to participate in a free Beginner Handgun Safety Course on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Seating is limited to just 10 students, and registration will be on a first come, first served basis.
The course is designed for individuals who are unfamiliar with firearms, particularly pistols, and will focus on the fundamentals of handgun safety and shooting. The training will be led by an NRA-certified handgun instructor and NRA Range Safety Officers.
Participants must bring their own ammunition. The course will begin in a classroom setting at the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and conclude with a live-fire session at the shooting range. The class will be held rain or shine, so attendees should come prepared for the weather.
While the course meets the training requirement for a West Virginia Concealed Carry License, it’s also ideal for those who already have a license or simply want to become more comfortable and confident with handgun safety.
To register or ask questions, contact the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office at 304-436-8523. Be sure to leave your name and phone number so organizers can notify you of any updates or changes.
