ELKINS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Mon National Forest Road 209, commonly known as Shavers Fork Road, will undergo a major construction project starting Monday, July 10.
The road, which provides access to the popular Stonecoal Dispersed Camping area along the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River, is expected to be closed until the spring of 2024. However, foot traffic will be permitted when construction activities are not underway.
Located off Route 250/WV-92 southeast of Huttonsville, Forest Road 209 has become a crucial route for outdoor enthusiasts seeking to enjoy the natural beauty of Monongahela National Forest in Randolph County. The upcoming project aims to address key infrastructure issues and enhance the overall experience for visitors.
Originally scheduled for 2024-2025, the construction project has been expedited due to several rain events that have accelerated the deterioration of a significant culvert on the main road over Red Run. The aging culvert will be replaced with a 76-foot-long bridge, ensuring greater safety and durability.
In addition, the project involves the relocation of a campsite and the re-engineering of the road to eliminate a hazardous curve, providing improved accessibility for vehicles.
Funding for this vital endeavor comes from the Great American Outdoors Act of 2020, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing the deferred maintenance backlog on national forest and grasslands.
Jack Tribble, District Ranger, expressed his satisfaction with the upcoming improvements, stating, “I am very pleased we are able to make these much-needed improvements to ensure safe and reliable access to the Stonecoal area. I know how popular this area is, and we plan to open the road again just as soon as the project is complete.”
The Forest Service has already made substantial progress in addressing deferred maintenance projects nationwide. Since 2021, they have completed over 122 such projects across 53 national forests in 25 states. Currently, there are more than 880 additional projects funded and at various stages of completion.
