ELKINS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – In anticipation of the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, officials from Monongahela National Forest are reminding the public that the use of fireworks is strictly prohibited within the forest boundaries.
The Forest Service emphasizes that this prohibition includes possessing, igniting, discharging, or using any kind of fireworks on National Forest System lands.
Aaron Kendall, the Fire Management Officer for Monongahela National Forest, stressed the importance of adhering to these regulations.
“Setting off fireworks in the Forest is not only illegal, but it is also a hazardous activity that can lead to injury and wildfires,” Kendall stated. He further encouraged visitors to enjoy public fireworks displays in nearby communities as a safer alternative.
To report fire-related incidents in the Forest, individuals can contact the Mid-Atlantic Coordination Center 24-hour dispatch line at (717) 980-3230. In cases of emergencies, the public is advised to call 911.
Law enforcement personnel will maintain a vigilant presence to ensure compliance with the fireworks prohibition this year. Those found in possession of fireworks on public lands may face confiscation and fines of up to $5,000, as well as possible imprisonment of up to six months.
Additionally, individuals deemed responsible for starting wildfires can be held civilly and/or criminally liable.
