BOONE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – More than 70 workers are set to lose their jobs following the closure of a Boone County coal mine.
Eagle Horizon Resources, LLC announced in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice that it will close its Eagle Horizon Mine, located at 1295 Ashford Hill Road in Ashford.
According to the notice, 71 employees will permanently lose their jobs as a result of the closure. The company did not cite a reason for closing the mine.
Affected employees have been notified of the layoffs and are expected to be separated from employment on Oct. 11, 2026.
The positions affected include miners, electricians, mechanics, equipment operators, truck operators, loaders, laborers, foremen and other production and administrative positions. The largest single group affected is surface facility truck operators, with 12 positions being eliminated.
The company said the affected employees are not represented by a union and will not have bumping rights, meaning employees will not be able to displace more junior workers from their positions.
The WARN notice was dated Aug. 11 and sent to Workforce West Virginia’s Dislocated Worker Services Unit. Boone County Commission President Brett Kuhn was also copied on the notice.
