BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A mother is charged with child neglect after one of her children was found wandering on a busy road in Beckley.
On July 2, 2024, at 9:55 PM, PFC L.A. Appell responded to a welfare check at 306 N. Eisenhower Drive, Freedom Skate Park. The Emergency Operations Center informed of a woman with three young children at the park.
According to a witness, the woman was neglecting her children, leading to one child wandering onto N. Eisenhower Drive, requiring intervention from her granddaughter.
Upon arrival, the park was closed, and Brianna Ulery, the defendant, was found sitting on a bench with her youngest child. Recognizing Ulery from a prior incident on June 4, 2024, involving intoxication and a confrontation with juveniles, PFC L.A. Appell noticed the smell of alcohol and a partially consumed beer can nearby.
When questioned about her other two sons, Ulery became emotional and could not provide their whereabouts. The boys were later found unattended in the park. Ulery displayed signs of intoxication and was unsteady on her feet.
A breathalyzer test indicated her blood alcohol level at 0.200. Due to her condition and failure to supervise her children, Child Protective Services were contacted. Unable to locate the original complainant for further information, the police arranged for Ulery to be taken to a homeless shelter.
On July 3, 2024, at 7:30 PM, the witness reported observing a child walking towards the road, prompting her granddaughter to intervene and return the child to Ulery at the park.
The witness described Ulery’s lack of supervision over her children during their time at the park. Efforts are underway to secure an arrest warrant for Brianna Ulery on charges of public intoxication, trespassing, and endangering the welfare of a child.
