SUMMERSVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – This week, Nicholas County Circuit Clerk Debbie Facemire called it quits with the Democratic Party and officially switched her party registration to Republican.
Facemire says that the present-day Democratic Party is not what it used to be and that it was time to change. “My views no longer aligned with those of the Democrat party and the beautiful part about our democracy is that I can make that choice,” Facemire said.
Debbie Facemire has worked in the Nicholas County Circuit Clerk’s office since June of 1989 as Deputy Circuit Clerk and then was elected Circuit Clerk in 2009.
She says that over her time involved in public service, the Democratic Party itself has fallen apart. “Nicholas County, for a long time, was a Democratic County. I, too, was a Democrat based on family and local beliefs. I saw a divide in the Nicholas County Democratic Party after I was elected in 2008,” Facemire stated.
Regardless of party affiliation, Facemire explains that she is determined to continue her work for the citizens of Nicholas County.
“I strive to serve the citizens of Nicholas County to the best of my ability. My staff and I are available to assist or answer any questions someone may have,” Facemire said. “I continue to do my job and we each have our own values & beliefs but it takes all political parties to make wise decisions.”
Nicholas County GOP Chairwoman Benjean Rapp welcomed Facemire to the party and expressed her excitement about the switch.
“As the Majority party in West Virginia and Nicholas County, and being the County Chairwoman it is humbling, that we have so many citizens as new registrants choose the Republican Party, as well as, so many that were registered of the other parties switch to Republican,” Rapp said.
Rapp believes that the Democrat Party has moved too far to the left and that many are jumping ship on the party in Nicholas County and abroad as a result.
“They have seen the Democratic Party continue to go farther away from common concerns, economically, socially,” Rapp stated. “We have had three elected officeholders change party affiliation since 2022. Those in these leadership positions are like most Nicholas County citizens, conservative.”
Facemire was sworn in for another six-year term on Tuesday, January 3rd.
